Sports Physiotherapy

Whether you run Olmsted Road on Mount Royal, play in a weeknight hockey league or cycle the Lachine Canal path, an injury can put your season on hold fast. At Urgence Physio, we have been treating sports injuries in Montreal since 2009, for young athletes and for adults who stay active well past 50.
Our goal is simple: get you moving again safely, and understand why the injury happened so it does not come back.

Sports injuries we treat

Every sport loads the body differently. Every day we see recreational and competitive athletes for problems such as:

  1. Ankle and knee sprains, common in soccer, basketball and skiing
  2. Tendinitis and tendinopathy (shoulder, elbow, Achilles tendon, patellar tendon)
  3. Muscle strains and tears in the hamstrings, calves or groin
  4. Back and neck pain linked to weight training or CrossFit
  5. Concussions, with vestibular follow-up for dizziness and balance problems
  6. Rehabilitation after surgery, such as an ACL reconstruction

If your pain is not on this list, tell us about it anyway. We assess every case before we suggest a plan, whether you are a weekend runner, a dancer, a tennis player or a varsity athlete.

How sports physiotherapy treatment works

Everything starts with a full assessment. Your physiotherapist examines the injured area, but also the way you move, run or jump, because the cause of knee pain is sometimes found at the hip or the foot.

From there, we build a plan around your sport and your goals:

  1. Manual therapy to reduce pain and restore range of motion
  2. Progressive strengthening and motor control exercises
  3. Dry needling to release muscle trigger points
  4. Sport-specific retraining before you return to play
  5. A home exercise program to follow between sessions

We adjust the plan at every visit based on your progress, and we do not keep you in treatment longer than you need.

A multidisciplinary team under one roof

A sports injury rarely affects just one system. That is why our clinic brings together physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage therapy, acupuncture and occupational therapy. Your physiotherapist can refer you to a colleague when it helps, without you having to look elsewhere in Montreal.

Our team speaks more than ten languages, including French, English, Spanish and Arabic, so you can explain your injury in the language you are most comfortable with. And if an injury makes it hard to get around, we also offer at-home physiotherapy visits, so you can start your rehab without crossing the city on crutches. Why see a sports physiotherapist instead of waiting

Many athletes rest for a few days and hope the pain goes away. Rest alone rarely helps a tendon or ligament regain its strength, and returning too quickly raises the risk of reinjury.

A physiotherapist experienced with sports injuries knows how to manage your training load. We tell you what you can keep doing while you heal, what to avoid, and when to get back to competition. You stay active, just in a smarter way.

The Montreal climate matters too. Switching from outdoor running to the treadmill in the fall, or jumping straight back on the bike in spring, often causes overload injuries. We factor those seasonal shifts into your program, along with your competition calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a sports physiotherapist?

No, in Quebec you can see a physiotherapist directly without a medical referral. Some private insurance plans do ask for a prescription for reimbursement, so check your policy.

How many sessions will it take to heal my injury?

It depends on the type of injury, how severe it is and how active you are. After the assessment, your physiotherapist gives you a realistic estimate and revisits it as sessions go on.

Do you treat children and teenagers who play sports?

Yes. We see patients from age 2 to 80, and we adapt exercises to the growth stage and sport of young athletes.

Are my sessions covered by insurance?

Most group insurance plans cover physiotherapy, but coverage varies from one plan to another. Check your policy before your first visit, and feel free to ask us any questions about receipts.

Can I keep training during my treatment?

In most cases, yes. Your physiotherapist tells you which exercises and activities are safe for keeping your fitness while you heal, and how quickly to build the intensity back up.
